In addition to protecting the employer’s property, employers are obliged to take all reasonably practible steps to ensure the health and safety of its workers. For many workplaces, these obligations extend to the implementation of effective security measures, and so an inspection policy could be considered an effective work health and safety initiative. In view of this, the principles of work health and safety underscore the stated purpose of the policy.
As with any policy, workplace participants should be informed, trained, and instructed about the content and consequences of the policy. There are additional initiatives that can be taken such as displaying signs around the workplace (particularly entry points) to inform that entry to the premises is conditional on the person submitting personal property and effects for inspection. Terms and conditions of employment may also provide for this condition.
